Having a Healthy Mouth is an Essential Factor in Your Overall Health
We Care About Your Oral Health — Because We Care About YOU!
Our holistic approach concerns your overall well being, and this starts with the foundation of your oral health. The mouth is one of the most important entrances to the body and it can affect — and be affected by — many factors. Your oral health is not just brushing and flossing. You must have healthy gums and bones to have healthy teeth. Your mouth has to be healthy and clean to maintain itself — and to maintain you. This is why we have such an emphasis on your oral health at Village Dental Group.
Kids: Good Oral Health Starts Early
It’s a good idea to start your kids on the road to good Oral Health early. Dental check-ups are important for cleaning, applying sealants to prevent cavities, and to ensure their teeth are coming in properly. And just as important, we’ll show your kids how and why to care for their teeth, with kid-friendly videos. For babies and toddlers too young to brush, we show parents how to care for their children’s teeth and gums.
They were so great with my five-year-old! Really friendly, clean, professional office, great for the whole family.
Preventative Maintenance — Key to Your Oral Health
The importance of preventative maintenance to your Oral Health cannot be stressed enough. This is why the first person you’ll see when you come to our office is the Hygienist. In addition to professional cleaning, they are trained to observe anomalies in oral tissue through Oral Cancer Screeneing. They’ll also show you how to properly clean and take care of your mouth. If bridge work or dentures are part of a treatment plan, the Hygienist will also ensure that patients know how to clean and care for these. We also provide electric tooth brushes and water flossers to help you be more effective in cleaning your teeth and gums.
Yes, preventative measures include coming in consistently when scheduled to get your teeth professionally cleaned. Looking at your overall health and oral conditions, the Dentist will recommend a schedule that’s best for each individual. With your overall well-being in mind, our approach is to be as proactive as possible about your oral health.
“Working in a dental practice that focuses on oral health through routine cleanings and check-ups makes a happy environment to work in. I consider it a privilege to serve our community by providing the best dental care for our patients. If you are considering joining us for your oral health, I look forward to welcoming you.”
Judy, Registered Dental Hygienist and our Office Manager
Schedule a Cleaning with Our Expert, Gentle Hygienists
Oral health problems build up and worsen over time. Some patients avoid regular cleanings due to discomfort they have experienced. Good news — our professional Dental Hygienists are very gentle. If you are experiencing any of problems below, we can help you restore your mouth to good oral health.
Bruxism (Grinding Your Teeth)
Patients under stress can grind their teeth. It’s been found that the majority of bruxers are women. Bruxing can cause sore neck and jaw muscles, clicking in the jaw, and the beginning of TMJ problems. If not corrected, teeth can be worn down or broken. Various bite guards or appliances can be employed to control bruxism.
Read our article: Understanding Bruxism: Causes and Treatments for Teeth Grinding
The Dangers of Plaque and Tartar Buildup
Each day, bacteria and food particles build up and create a sticky clear material called plaque. Everybody has plaque, but it is soft, and easily removed through regular brushing and flossing. However, if plaque is left on the teeth due to an inadequate oral hygiene routine, it can form tartar, and eventually calculus.
Tartar and calculaus are essentially hardened plaque that accumulates minerals from saliva over time. They can only be removed with professional cleaning from a dentist or dental hygienist. If left untreated, tartar can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.
Bad Breath? Swollen, bleeding gums? These are symptoms of periodontal disease, commonly called gum disease, which is an infection caused by bacteria in plaque. A sticky film of plaque, loaded with bacteria, builds up on the teeth and hardens, eventually growing beneath the gums. If left untreated, the gums become swollen and bleed easily — and eventually teeth loosen and have to be removed. We have two stages of treatment. The first is Deep Cleaning, and if that does not correct the problem, you are refrred to Dr. Simmonds, our in-house Periodontist.
Additionally, the toxins released by the bacteria enter the blood and affect other health issues, like Diabetes, and heart disease. Heredity is the largest risk factor for periodontal disease. Smoking and poor oral hygiene can also contribute.
Expert Gum Disease Treatment with Our Periodontist
Dr. Simmonds, our in-house Periodontist, is a highly trained specialist, with a deep understanding of the gum tissue and how to treat it. He is an expert in using the latest techniques, including non-invasive laser treatment.
If periodontal disease persists and becomes a serious issue, resulting in tooth loss, Dr. Simmonds is also expert in implant dentistry. In all cases, he makes sure patients are treated properly and not undertreated (i.e. if surgery is needed.)

Don’t wait until there are problems! Come in for a dental check-up!
Periodontal Disease, or Gum Disease, is a serious condition that gets worse if not treated properly, and can even result in tooth loss. Symptoms include sore, swollen or puffy gums, and bleeding. The good news is, it’s typically easy to prevent, with a good oral health routine and regular professional cleanings. There are several factors that increase the risk of gum disease. Learn about them, so you can avoid it!
If you already have gum disease, you can trust our compassionate in-house Periodontist to treat you with expertise, using the most advanced techniques.
Age Increases Gum Disease Risk
Periodontal disease increases with age:
47.2% of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease.
70.1% of adults 65 years and older have periodontal disease.
Data per 2009-2010 CDC Report
Factors that Increase Your Risk of Gum Disease
Smoking
Diabetes
Poor oral hygiene
Stress
Heredity
Crooked teeth
Underlying immunodeficiencies, e.g., AIDS
Fillings that have become defective
Bridges that no longer fit properly
Female hormonal changes such as with pregnancy or use of oral contraceptives
Certain medications — for example, blood pressure medications
Diabetes and Gum Disease — like the “chicken and egg”
Unfortunately, these two conditions go together — in fact, most diabetics have gum disease. Diabetes depresses your immune system; if your sugar is not under control your gums will swell and bleed. Today, Alzheimers Disease is also known as Type 3 Diabetes. If you suffer from Diabetes, it’s important to let your dentist know. We can help you manage gum disease.
If you have gum disease, the time to take charge is NOW!
I love everyone at Village Dental. From Dr. Christian to all her staff, I couldn’t be more happy with my treatment. I am someone who REALLY dislikes going to the dentist. Village Dental Group understands my fears and soothes my anxiety every time I visit. So glad they are my go-to for dental health! Thanks to the Group!
Carolyn C.
I’ve been going to Village Dental since around 2008/2009 — I have a long history there with Dr. Christian. My experience there has been good, the staff are very embracing; very good people there.
Willie W.
This was my first visit at Village Dental Group; to say the least I was somewhat nervous but Ghislaine the hygienist made me feel so much at ease it was a wonderful experience. Dr Christian and her staff were very friendly and professional.
Magda M.
Most will agree, I think, that we go to the dentist because we have to. This will sound strange. I look forward to going to Village Dental Group. Simply put, the people and service are the best. They demonstrate a genuine care for my oral health.

1. What are the best practices for maintaining good oral health?
Maintaining good oral health involves several key practices: – Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. – Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth. – Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings, typically every six months. – Limit sugary and acidic foods that can contribute to tooth decay. – Stay hydrated and preferably drink water instead of sugary beverages.
2. How often should I visit the dentist?
It is generally recommended to visit your dentist at least twice a year for routine check-ups and cleanings. However, if you have specific oral health concerns, such as gum disease or cavities, your dentist may suggest more frequent visits.
3. What should I do if I experience tooth pain?
If you experience tooth pain, it is important to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Tooth pain can be a sign of various dental issues, including cavities, infections, or gum disease. In the meantime, you can manage the pain with over-the-counter pain relievers and by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water.
4. Are there specific oral health concerns for Seniors?
Yes, seniors often face unique oral health challenges, such as dry mouth (xerostomia), gum disease, and tooth loss. It is essential for seniors to maintain regular dental visits and stay informed about proper oral hygiene practices. Additionally, staying hydrated and using saliva substitutes can help alleviate dry mouth symptoms.
5. How does diet affect oral health?
Diet plays a significant role in oral health. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy products helps provide essential nutrients for healthy teeth and gums. Limiting the intake of sugary snacks and beverages can help prevent cavities. Additionally, foods high in calcium and vitamin D support tooth enamel and bone health.
Always remember that proactive care and regular check-ups are crucial for maintaining optimal oral health throughout your life! If you have more questions or need personalized advice, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dental professional.
