We already went out and got the “BIG CHECK!” Now we can only humbly ask our follows, families and friends to help us help those we love!

10 Things To Know That Can Save Your Life!

  1. Your Family History- plays a role and can increase your risk of developing cancer. There are three genes, BRCA1, BRCA2, and PALB2, which can increase the possibility of breast and ovarian cancers when mutated. When these genes are passed down from one or both of your parents, your risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer increases significantly. So if you have a family history of these cancers please opt for genetic testing. It’s quite simple! It is done by examining your blood or saliva.

  1. You Might Not Even Know- You may have breast cancer and not even know it because you do not have any visible clues. Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels within the breast tissue. It may be an indication of the body’s additional supply of blood aimed at pre-existing breast tumors. The best way of detecting the condition is through a thermography because unlike mammograms, this unique technique goes to the target under the surface and into the tissue.

  1. Mammograms- Getting a mammogram can help detect breast cancer early and increase the odds of successful treatment. Small doses of radiation are used to perform the specialized x-ray of the breasts and can produce images of the cancer two to three years before it can be physically detected. For an accurate reading, the breasts are pressed between the machine plates, and most women agree it is only an uncomfortable, rather than painful, procedure.

  1. There’s An App For Everything- If you’re a smartphone users you have no excuse for forgetting to check the signs and symptoms of breast cancer since an app can be downloaded for free. The app’s visual reminders include the best times to check your breasts, including in the shower and while applying lotion. It comes with quizzes which can be shared on social media to encourage your friends and to promote early detection. It is a simple and convenient tool for the tech savvy.

  1. Early Detection- One of the most critical tests for early detection is the Breast Self Exam (BSE). Visual clues can sometimes be obvious and include any of the following changes: Dimpling, puckering of the skin, or bulging of the breast tissue. Nipples can change in position or become inverted, a rash can develop, and soreness and swelling can occur. It is recommended to do the BSE early in a menstrual cycle and make notes so comparisons can be done monthly.

  1. Be Proactive- You know your body better than anyone, take a proactive approach to early detection can save your life. Getting regular checkups with your doctor is essential, as are clinical breast exams if you’re over forty. While doing self-exams, you can note any changes to discuss with your medical practitioner. If you’re over the age of fifty you’re at a highest risk, regardless of your age you should be attentive since cancer can hit at any age.

  1. A Little Exercise- You can reduce the risk of breast cancer through regular exercise. Studies have shown that you can reduce your risk of breast cancer by up to 30% through quality exercise. This doesn’t mean you have to join a gym and work out 7 day per week! Even a daily walk and active gardening for at least thirty to sixty minutes a day counts. Exercise daily to burns calories, which in turn reduce fat, where estrogen is stored. More fat means more storage space for estrogen. Paired with proper nutrition speeds up weight loss.

  1. Eating Better- There’s a lot of talk is generated about the benefits of proper nutrition, but it is also backed by science. Eating certain foods have cancer-fighting compounds, including broccoli, carrots, cabbage, pomegranates, and raspberries. It is important that you have a balance of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats, as opposed to a diet high in sugar and saturated fats. You should aim for a colorful plate by shopping the perimeters of your grocery store.

  1. Regular Sleep – is essential for overall health and helps in the prevention of breast cancer and other cancers. The quality of sleep you get is based on the level of melatonin in your body and researchers have found lower levels equate to growth of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer cells. If you’re not getting enough sleep try to reduce screen time before bed. I know! It’s hard not to watch TV or be on your cell phone in bed. Try leaving your phone charging in the kitchen and just GO TO SLEEP! You’ll thank me in the morning! Still having trouble? Try taking three milligrams of melatonin and say good bye to those sleepless nights.

  1. Vitamins- Part of your healthy diet should include all essential vitamin and mineral requirements are met. Vitamin D3 is important in the prevention of breast cancer and can be lacking in people with limited exposure to sunlight. Woman with breast cancer, together with low levels of D vitamins, reportedly have up to seventy-three percent higher risk of death than breast cancer patients with sufficient vitamin D levels. Magnesium and B Complex are also breast cancer fighters.

Want To Always Have Fresh Breath?

Causes and cure for bad breath

Village Dental Group – Combating Bad Breath!

Like me, I’m sure you’ve experienced hanging with friends with increasingly bad breath as the spinach dip, potato skins and drink glasses pile up during a great night out. Maybe you’ve experienced that ghastly morning breath after eating a delightful bowl of cereal at 2:30am. The next morning dreading the 4 or 5 hours it took to get rid of that taste no matter how many times I brushed. Have you ever wondered what causes the horrific taste, smell and feel in your mouth? More importantly, what can we do to prevent it?

Almost all bad breath is a result from our oral condition. Smelly compounds excreted by millions of tiny bacteria eating the dead cells and food particles in our mouth which causes the odor and bad taste. It was shocking to learn that our mouths have 100-200 bacterial species, reaching numbers of hundreds of millions to hundreds of billions of individual bacteria residing in our mouth at any one time.

Gram-negative bacteria are the culprits that cause bad breath. They burrow below our gum line and expel a gas that causes our odiferous condition. Multiplying in gaps between our gums and teeth and the crevices of our tongues (Ever wake up in the morning and your tongue feels like you could shave your tongue?) Rhetorical question! These little demons produce a gassy sulfuric compound that cause the horrible taste and smell in our mouth.

The Acidic Condition:

DEHYDRATION – Saliva is oxygen rich and a natural neutralizer of PH, prohibiting the growth of this stinky bacteria and in turn our bad breath. These stinky bacteria thrive when we become dehydrated. Reduced saliva flow results in increased acidity making us more prone to bad breath.

  • COFFEE – Caffeine dehydrates our mouth. This dehydrating effect combined with the fermentation of milk or sugar residue in our mouth contributes to dry, sour breath.
    • Tip – We don’t have to cut back on coffee, just drink plenty of water after you drink coffee to counterbalance dehydration.

  • ALCOHOL – Alcohol really dries out your mouth. The bacteria simply love it and cause that ever dreaded condition “Cotton Mouth”.
  • Tip – For every drink consumed have a glass of water to prevent bad breath.

  • Mouthwash – Many contain up to 26% alcohol content and will eradicate good and bad bacteria. When the fresh tingly taste wears off, mouthwashes with high alcohol content will leave your mouth drier, creating an environment for gram negative bacteria to flourish.
    • Tip – Choose a mouthwash with low alcohol content and/or drink a glass of water an hour or so after using mouthwash.

  • Cavities – Bad breath may sign of tooth decay. At first, bacteria attack the hard outer enamel of your tooth. As it travels deeper into the inner tooth, the bacteria causing the decay change. faecalis, commonly found in the colon. Its presence changes the compounds released into your mouth causing bad breath.
    • Tip – See a dentist for checkups at least twice a year. As decay happens below the gum line or in between teeth. So, if you’re suffering from bad breath it might be a good time to see the dentist. (Please visit our specials offers page for a $100.00 new patient exam downloadable gif card).
  • Eat Fresh – Most modern diets are full of sugary processed foods (think of those delicious smores, cookies and sweets). This type of bacteria love processed sugar. As bacteria ferment the sugars in our mouth, they release smelly sulfuric compounds.
    • Tip – Replace processed foods with fresh fruit, proteins and vegetables for late night snacks and you will notice a significant difference in your breath quality.

  • Clean You Tongue – Gram negative bacteria love dark, moist crevices especially on the tongue’s surface. Up to 70% of the bacteria that cause bad breath live and breed here.
    • Tip – You can try gently scraping your tongue with a soft toothbrush or purchase a tongue scraper. I have one and it works very well!

  • Floss – Gram negative bacteria love to hide out in between your teeth, along your gum line, and on your tongue. Try taking a whiff of your dental floss after using it, the horrible smell made a believer out of me.
    • Tip – Flossing daily is a great way to beat bad breath! Don’t let the bacteria host a stink party in your mouth!

  • Eat Yogurt – Gram negative bacteria produce hydrogen sulphide , a major cause of bad breath.
    • Tip – If you eat yogurt twice a day for 3 weeks you can drop the levels of hydrogen sulphide by up to 80%. Not only will you breath be fresher, you might even lose a few unwanted pounds! Win! Win!

What make us different from other dental offices?

  • We first look at the treatment plan and see what must be done together or in separate procedures. Perhaps we can spread the procedures out over a period of time. Months or even years.
  • If you have dental insurance we will check to see what benefits are available for this year and when the benefits will renew.
  • We compare the procedures to the benefits available to maximize insurance coverage. One part of the treatment plan can be done this year and the other next year once the plan renews. Some plans can be spread out over multiple years. This often makes a very large difference in what the insurance pays and what you pay. Most dentists want to do the whole procedure right now. However, we understand that some patients simply cannot afford to have the whole treatment plan completed at once. At Village Dental Group we would rather complete the needed treatment over 3 years than not having any treatment done at all. Teeth will not heal themselves and will only get worse with time. We will maximize the insurance coverage and minimize what you pay out of pocket!
  • Last we will break up your portion into affordable monthly payments. We are more than happy to work with you to make sure the payments are well within your budgets. Your plan is tailored to your specific needs and circumstances. A lot of dental offices will not go to this extent to make sure you are paying as little as possible out of pocket.
  • Village Dental Group offers convenient payment plans and Fee Reductions for Senior Citizens and Cash Payments.

Eligibility & Restrictions:

  • We require a written treatment plan dated within the last year.
  • A copy of the X-rays used by the dentist who prepared your treatment plan being reviewed.
  • Started treatment plans are not eligible for a free second opinion.  Village Dental Group can not give a free opinion on dental work already started or completed.

If you do not have a copy of your X-rays and do not wish Village Dental Group to obtain a copy from your dentist we will be happy to take a complimentary set of X-rays.

If you would like to schedule a free second opinion or would like to speak with one of our team members please call 973-761-4800 or CLICK HERE to contact us. We look forward to welcoming you into the Village Dental Group family of patients!

NHL Hall Of Famers At Village Dental Group?

We were happy to welcome former NHL stars and now hall of famers Mike Richter, Paul Coffey and Bryan Trottier at the Village Dental Group office to shoot SAP 100 Years of Play Off Stats commercial. We Can Save Billions Of Gallons Of Essex County Water Annually

dentist south orange

How Much Water Is Essex County Wasting Annually?

The flow rate of a standard bathroom faucet is 1.6 gallons per minute. If we brush for three minutes with the faucet running, we’re wasting 5 gallons each time we brush. That may not seem like too much, but if all 801,000 million people living in Essex County, NJ did that twice a day, while brushing alone we will waste 8 million gallons of Essex County’s water supply every year.

What Can Your Family Do?

We ask all Village Dental Group patients to turn off the water while brushing and have their household members do the same. You can use this topic as a conversation starter at the water cooler at work, talk about an apropos topic! When a family of four stops running the water while brushing they will save over 14 THOUSAND gallons of water annually, that amount of water can sustain an impoverished village of 100 people for 2 ½ months!

Should I Brush In the Shower to Save Water?

One might think so; after all you’re multitasking using only one stream of water. There are a few reasons why this isn’t a good idea.

Remember, your showerhead is a full of bacteria, which adds to levels of bacteria in the water you’re brushing with. Your mouth is already the home to a hive of bacteria; studies show you’ll get significantly more bacteria on your toothbrush by leaving it in the shower, which will ultimately wind up in your mouth.

Considering showerheads use more water than sink faucets; After all, the shower is running the entire time you’re brushing, consequently wasting more water than you would if you brushed at the sink. The only real solution is brushing at your sink while turning the water off after wetting your toothbrush. So make sure you’re shutting off the faucet every time you brush, and please do not brush in the shower unless you have an extra arm to efficiently multitask.
