The Many Benefits of Orthodontics
Getting your teeth properly aligned is more than just a matter of aesthetics. Teeth that are not coming in properly, or a bite that doesn’t fully close can cause problems down the road. It’s important to see the Orthodontist early in life, as problems are generally easier and faster to treat at a younger age.
Oral Health Benefits
Reduced risk of cavities: Straight teeth are easier to clean and maintain, which can reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease
Fewer dental emergencies: Orthodontic treatment for certain conditions can help prevent future dental emergencies
Functional Benefits
Better chewing and speech: Straight teeth can improve both chewing and speech functions
Improved jaw function: Orthodontic treatment can improve the way your teeth and jaws work together, reducing the risk of TMJ disorders.
Reduced muscle strain: Orthodontic treatment can reduce muscle strain
Cosmetic Benefits
More attractive smile: Orthodontic treatment can help you achieve and maintain a beautiful smile with perfectly straight teeth
Improved self-esteem: Most patients experience a rise of confidence when they can smile without feeling self-conscious about how their smile looks

Meet Dr. Garrison Copeland, Our In-House Orthodontist
Dr. Copeland believes that self-confidence and a beautiful smile go hand in hand. His career goal is to continue to bring light to people’s lives through their smiles.
Growing up in Cleveland, OH with severely misaligned teeth, Dr. Copeland understood at an early age the significance of having a healthy and aesthetic smile. Determined to help others facing similar circumstances, he pursued a career in Orthodontics.
Dr. Copeland earned his Bachelor’s degree at Morehouse College, his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at Howard University, and his post-graduate orthodontic training at Case Western Reserve University. For the next seven years, he practiced orthodontics in his hometown, helping more than 3,000 patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles.
In 2018, Dr. Copeland chose to continue his training at BronxCare Health Systems, where he focused on Cosmetic Dentistry and Implants, and was named Chief Resident.
Advanced X-Rays Allow Accurate Assessment
Our orthodontist will take a special x-ray (called a cephalometric x-ray), along with impressions and photographs. Together, these are used to decide which orthodontic treatment is best suited to your case — aligners or traditional braces.
Don’t like the look of metal braces? We offer options, such as Clear Braces.

FAQs about Dental Implants: Smile Brighter with Expert Orthodontic Care
1. What is orthodontics and how can it benefit me?
Orthodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities. The primary benefit of orthodontic treatment is the alignment of teeth and jaws, leading to improved oral health, enhanced aesthetics, and increased self-confidence. Properly aligned teeth can also make it easier to maintain good oral hygiene and can reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
2. At what age should I visit an orthodontist?
While the Canadian Dental Association recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation around age 7, it’s never too late to seek orthodontic treatment. Adults can also benefit from orthodontic procedures. The right age for treatment can vary based on individual circumstances, so it’s best to consult with an orthodontic professional to determine the optimal time for you or your child.
3. What are the different types of braces available?
There are several types of braces available, including traditional metal braces, ceramic (tooth-coloured) braces, lingual braces (which are placed on the back of the teeth), and clear aligners such as Invisalign. Each option has its pros and cons, including aesthetics, comfort, and cost. Your orthodontist can help you choose the best type for your needs and lifestyle.
4. How long will my orthodontic treatment take?
The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on individual needs and the complexity of the case. Typically, treatment can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Your orthodontist will provide a more accurate estimate after a thorough examination and developing a personalized treatment plan.
5. Is orthodontic treatment painful?
Most patients experience some discomfort or pressure during the initial adjustment phase after getting braces or clear aligners, but this usually subsides within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief can help alleviate any discomfort. Your orthodontist will provide detailed instructions on how to manage any potential pain throughout your treatment.
6. How do I take care of my braces or aligners?
Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. For those with braces, it’s important to brush and floss regularly, avoiding sticky or hard foods that could damage the appliances. If you’re using clear aligners, you should remove them while eating and brush your teeth before reinserting them. Regular visits to your orthodontist for adjustments and check-ups are also vital to ensure your treatment progresses smoothly.
